Kerala Lottery Glossary
This glossary defines 46 Kerala lottery terms from tickets, results, claims and law. Each definition is one or two sentences. A link follows where a full guide exists.
What do the words on a Kerala lottery ticket mean?
A Kerala ticket carries a lottery name, a draw code, a series, a 6-digit number and the price. Rule 3(2) of the Kerala Paper Lotteries Rules 2005 lists these front-side details. The terms below explain each one.
Lottery code
The lottery code is the 2-letter short form of a lottery’s name. Examples are KR for Karunya, KN for Karunya Plus and BR for a bumper.
Draw code
The draw code is the lottery code plus the draw’s serial number. KR-770 is the 770th Karunya draw, held on 3 October 2026.
Series
The series is the 2 letters printed before the ticket number. A weekly lottery uses 12 series, such as KA to KM for KR-770. See Kerala lottery series letters.
Ticket number
The ticket number is the 6-digit number after the series. A full ticket reads like KA 123456: series first, then number.
Face value
Face value is the price printed on the ticket. Rule 6(3) of the amended Kerala Rules bars sale below or above it.
Counterfoil
The counterfoil is the stub of each ticket kept at the office that sold it. Offices match a winning ticket with its counterfoil before paying.
Security features
Security features are marks embedded in the ticket to prove it is genuine. Rule 3(2A) lets the Director specify them. See ticket security features.
QR code
The QR code on a ticket is read by the official Bhagya Keralam app. The app confirms that the ticket is genuine and shows any prize. See the official app guide.
What do Kerala lottery draw and result terms mean?
Draw and result terms describe how winning numbers are picked and where they are published. Weekly draws take place at 3:00 PM at Gorky Bhavan, near Bakery Junction, Thiruvananthapuram.
Draw
A draw is the method that picks prize-winning numbers with a mechanical device based on random technology. The Kerala Gazette notification of each lottery describes it.
Weekly lottery
A weekly lottery is one of the 7 Kerala lotteries drawn once a week, one for each day. Each costs ₹50 and offers a first prize of ₹1 crore.
Bumper
A bumper is a special festival draw with a larger prize. Kerala holds 6 a year, and the 1998 Act caps bumpers at 6. See Kerala bumper lottery.
Panel of judges
The panel of judges supervises each draw. Rule 8 requires at least 3 judges, including a Chairman. See draw judges and machines.
Gorky Bhavan
Gorky Bhavan is the draw venue near Bakery Junction, Thiruvananthapuram. See Gorky Bhavan.
Result sheet
The result sheet is the official PDF of a draw’s winning numbers. It is published at result.keralalotteries.com, linked from statelottery.kerala.gov.in.
Result fax
The phrase “Kerala lottery fax” is a common search term for the official result sheet. Searchers use it about 22,000 times a month in India, according to Ahrefs.
Kerala Gazette
The Kerala Gazette is the Government’s official journal. Results and each lottery’s notification appear in it. See results in the Gazette.
LOTIS
LOTIS is the Lottery Information System of the Directorate. Its public result page is at lotteryagent.kerala.gov.in.
Live draw
The live draw is the broadcast of each draw on the Directorate’s YouTube channel. See live draw broadcast.
No-draw day
A no-draw day is a date with no weekly draw, such as a bumper day or a holiday. The central rules bar draws on a National Holiday. See draw holidays.
Guessing number
A guessing number is a prediction of the next result. Draws use a random mechanical device, so no method predicts a number.
What do Kerala lottery prize and claim terms mean?
Prize and claim terms describe what a ticket wins and how the money is paid. Winners have 90 days from the draw to claim.
Prize structure
The prize structure is the list of prize tiers, amounts and counts for a lottery. The Gazette notification fixes it for each scheme.
First prize
The first prize is the top prize, won by one full ticket number common to all series. A weekly first prize is ₹1 crore.
Consolation prize
A consolation prize goes to tickets with the first-prize number in the other series. The Karunya notification offers 11 consolation prizes of ₹5,000.
Endings
Endings are prizes won by matching the last 4 digits of the ticket number. The lower weekly tiers, from the 4th to the 9th prize, are endings.
Claim period
The claim period is the time allowed to surrender a winning ticket. It is 90 days from the draw, under the 2024 amendment.
Form V
Form V is the claim application for prizes above ₹10,000, under amended Rule 9(3). See how to claim a prize.
Joint claim
A joint claim is a claim by more than one person who shared the ticket price. It needs a notarised affidavit in Form VI.
TDS
TDS is income tax deducted at source from a prize: 30% above ₹10,000. It falls under Section 393(3) of the Income-tax Act 2025 (formerly Section 194B).
Cess
Cess is the 4% levy added on top of the TDS. See the Kerala lottery tax calculator.
Agent commission
Agent commission is the amount paid to the agent who sold a winning ticket. The Gazette notifications list it beside each prize, mostly at 10%.
Unclaimed prize
An unclaimed prize is one not claimed in time. It becomes the property of the Government. See unclaimed prizes.
Damaged ticket
A damaged ticket is torn or mutilated. A torn ticket is paid when found genuine, after an affidavit. See damaged or lost tickets.
What do Kerala lottery organisation and law terms mean?
Organisation and law terms name the offices, people and rules behind the lottery. The Government of Kerala runs it under the Lotteries (Regulation) Act 1998.
Directorate of State Lotteries
The Directorate is the head office that runs the Kerala lottery, at Vikas Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram. See the Directorate.
DLO
DLO stands for District Lottery Officer, who heads a district lottery office. The DLO grants agencies and sanctions mid-sized prize claims. See district lottery offices.
Agent
An agent is a Kerala resident appointed under an agreement to sell Kerala tickets. See how to become an agent.
Seller
A seller holds a sales permit and sells tickets bought from an agent. Only agents and sellers sell tickets to the public.
Sole distributor
The sole distributor sells tickets to agents at the first point of sale. The weekly notifications name the Agents’ and Sellers’ Welfare Fund Board. See the Welfare Fund Board.
Paper lottery
A paper lottery uses printed tickets. Kerala runs paper lotteries only and banned online lottery in 2005.
Online lottery
An online lottery issues computer-generated tickets registered on a central server at sale. Rule 2 of the central 2010 Rules defines it.
Lotteries (Regulation) Act 1998
The 1998 Act is the central law that lets a state run a lottery on 11 conditions. See the Act explained.

GST on lottery
GST is charged at 40% on the ticket’s base value and sits inside the printed price. See GST on tickets.
Karunya Benevolent Fund
The Karunya Benevolent Fund was a medical aid fund once run on lottery profits, according to Onmanorama (2020). See its history.
What do the Malayalam lottery words mean?
The Malayalam lottery words are bhagyakuri, narukkeduppu and kulukkal. Kerala searchers use all three in place of English terms.
Bhagyakuri
Bhagyakuri is the Malayalam word for lottery. The Directorate’s Malayalam name uses it. See bhagyakuri meaning.
Narukkeduppu
Narukkeduppu is the Malayalam word for a draw. The Directorate’s result page is titled with it, as “narukkeduppu phalam”.
Kulukkal
Kulukkal is a Malayalam search word for the lottery draw. The phrase “Kerala lottery kulukkal” draws about 4,500 searches a month in India, according to Ahrefs.
